The Internet Is Starting to Think Before It Clicks
For years, Internet discovery followed a familiar path:
Search → Links → Clicks → Website
Google became dominant by organizing that journey better than anyone else.
AI is beginning to change the sequence.
Instead of opening ten pages, people can now ask AI to search, compare, summarize and recommend before they ever visit a website.
That leads me to three hypotheses.
1. Search is not disappearing — but its economics are changing
Google Search is still growing.
That is exactly why this transition is interesting.
The traditional model is simple:
Question → Results → Ads → Clicks
AI changes the middle of that process.
Instead of only returning links, it can interpret the question, compare sources and recommend what matters.
The intent remains.
But more of the decision may happen before the click.
Search organized links. AI increasingly organizes decisions.
2. AI may send fewer visitors — but higher-intent visitors
Traditional search is excellent at generating traffic.
But many visitors are still researching.
AI can perform part of that research first.
That means someone arriving through AI may already understand the problem, know the options and have a specific reason for visiting.
So the more important question may not be:
How much AI traffic did we get?
It may be:
What did AI-referred visitors actually do?
3. RCJ may be seeing an early version of this
Our current first-touch data includes only 116 AI-attributed human readers.
That is far too small to call a trend.
But the behavior is worth watching.
So far, we have seen:
- 7 registrations
- 3 CTA visitors
- 2 application starts
- 1 opportunity save
These are overlapping actions, and the sample is still small.
So this is not proof.
It is an early signal.
The metric I am increasingly interested in is:
Qualified actions per 1,000 AI-referred readers.
RCJ is already testing this future
We are not only measuring AI discovery.
We are also building for it.
AI Vendor Search
Instead of manually browsing hundreds of vendors, describe the problem you are trying to solve and let RCJ help narrow the field.

RCJ Research Intelligence
Instead of manually searching across opportunities, programs and documents, ask the question directly.

The traditional website says:
Here is our information. Find what you need.
The AI-driven platform says:
Tell us what you are trying to accomplish. Let’s find the answer.
The bigger question
For years, organizations asked:
How high do we rank on Google?
That question will remain important.
But another one is emerging:
When an AI is asked a question in our field, does it know us, trust us and use our information?
And then:
When it sends someone to us, are they ready to act?
Google is not disappearing.
Search is not disappearing.
The click is not disappearing.
But AI may increasingly sit between human intent and the Internet.
And if that continues, the future may not belong to the websites with the most clicks.
It may belong to the sources AI trusts before the click happens.

Do you think AI will replace traditional search?
Or will it simply make the final click more valuable?

The Internet may not stop searching. It may simply start thinking before it clicks.
